Purpose & Significance

To enable international travel, serve as conclusive proof of Indian nationality and identity abroad, and secure consular protection from Indian diplomatic missions overseas.

General Eligibility Criteria

Any citizen of India by birth, descent, registration, or naturalization who has no disqualifying criminal proceedings, non-bailable warrants, or adverse security grounds under Section 6 of the Passports Act, 1967.

General Documents Required

Standard documents typically requested by statutory authorities during verification

  • Proof of Date of Birth (Birth Certificate, Matriculation / Secondary School certificate, PAN card, or Aadhaar)
  • Proof of Present Address (Aadhaar Card, Electricity / Water bill, Voter ID, Bank passbook, or Rent agreement)
  • Proof of Non-ECR status (Higher education degree / 10th pass certificate or income tax assessment orders, if applicable)
  • Old passport in original with self-attested copies of first and last two pages (for passport renewal/re-issue)
  • Standard annexures (Form C/D for government employees or minor declarations, where applicable)

General Application Workflow

Standard statutory flow from application presentation to final issuance

Register and submit online application form on the Passport Seva Portal (passportindia.gov.in).

Pay application fees online and book appointment at nearest PSK / POPSK.

Attend appointment with original documents; undergo biometric fingerprint scanning, photograph capture, and counter verification (A, B, C counters).

Jurisdictional police station conducts police verification of applicant's address and character record.

Upon clearance, the Regional Passport Office prints the passport booklet and dispatches it via India Post Speed Post.
