How the Indian PIN Code System Operates
India is partitioned into 9 primary postal zones: Zones 1–2 (North), Zones 3–4 (West & Central), Zones 5–6 (South), Zones 7–8 (East & North-East), and Zone 9 dedicated to the Army Postal Service (APS).
The first 2 digits identify the postal sub-circle or state postal circle. Adding the 3rd digit identifies the sorting district headquarters within that circle where mail is concentrated and sorted.
The final 3 digits designate the specific physical delivery post office—whether a General Post Office (GPO), Head Post Office (HO), Sub Post Office (SO), or Branch Post Office (BO).
