Apex Constitutional Court
Established under Article 124 of the Constitution. The highest court of appeal in India, final arbiter of constitutional matters, and guardian of fundamental rights under Article 32.
Constitutional Courts of States/UTs
Established under Article 214. Highest judicial body in each State or Union Territory, possessing extraordinary writ jurisdiction under Article 226 and supervisory authority over subordinate courts.
Principal District Jurisdiction
Principal civil courts of original jurisdiction and sessions courts for serious criminal offences at the district level. Governed administrative by High Courts under the eCourts project.
Grassroots Judicial Adjudication
Comprises Civil Judge Senior/Junior Division and Judicial Magistrates of the First Class (JMFC) addressing civil claims, summary trials, and local community disputes at the taluka level.
Three-Tier Consumer Protection (CPA 2019)
Quasi-judicial tribunals constituted under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 (District Commissions, State Commissions, and National NCDRC) providing speedy resolution of consumer grievances.
Subject-Specific Adjudication
Dedicated statutory dispute bodies including the National Green Tribunal (NGT), Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT), National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), and Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT).
Statutory Free Legal Aid & Lok Adalat
Constituted under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 (NALSA, SLSAs, DLSAs) to provide free legal representation to marginalized groups and conduct Lok Adalats for consensual dispute settlement.
Conceptualized under the National Policy and Action Plan for Implementation of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the Indian Judiciary, the eCourts Project is supervised by the eCommittee of the Supreme Court of India. Through the Case Information System (CIS), litigants and citizens can track case filings, scrutinies, daily orders, causelists, and judgments across district and high courts without physical courthouse visits.
