The Indian banking system is regulated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) under the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 and the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934. Commercial banks are classified into distinct categories:
Banks where the majority stake (more than 51%) is held by the Government of India. Examples include State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, and Bank of Baroda. They provide the backbone for rural credit, financial inclusion (PMJDY), and government payments.
Commercial banks where majority equity is held by private shareholders and institutional investors. Governed by RBI prudential guidelines, leading institutions like HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank are designated Domestic Systemically Important Banks (D-SIBs).
Financial entities established on a cooperative basis, registered under State or Multi-State Cooperative Societies Acts and supervised by the RBI. They play a vital role in financing urban micro-enterprises, self-employed individuals, and agriculture.
