Constitutional Definition

A charter of 11 moral and civic obligations prescribed for every citizen of India, incorporated by the 42nd Amendment (1976) and expanded by the 86th Amendment (2002).

Constitutional Purpose & Role in the Republic

To serve as a constant reminder to citizens that while enjoying fundamental rights, they also owe duties to the nation, its sovereignty, composite culture, and public property.

Abide by the Constitution and respect its ideals, institutions, the National Flag, and the National Anthem.

Duty of parents or guardians to provide educational opportunities to children between 6 and 14 years of age (added by 86th Amendment in 2002).

Key Articles & Constitutional Provisions

Article 51A(a): Respect for National Symbols

Duty to respect the Constitution, the National Flag, and the National Anthem, reinforced statutorily by the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971.

Article 51A(g): Environmental Stewardship

Duty to protect lakes, rivers, forests, and wildlife, actively cited by the Supreme Court in public interest environmental rulings.

Article 51A(k): Right to Education Parent Duty

Obligation of parent or guardian to ensure schooling for children aged 6 to 14, co-existing with Article 21A.
