The Ministry of Home Affairs is an apex ministry responsible for internal security, domestic policy, border management, Centre-State relations, administration of Union Territories, and the National Disaster Management Authority.
Permanent Role & Statutory Function
Apex ministry constitutionally charged with internal security, domestic policy, federal borders, central armed police forces, disaster mitigation, and inter-state relations under the Allocation of Business Rules 1961.
Constitutional & Executive Responsibilities
Maintenance of internal security, counter-terrorism, and public order across the nation
Border management along India's international land frontiers and maritime boundaries
Administration of Union Territories without legislative assemblies and coordination with other UTs
Deployment and administration of Central Armed Police Forces (CRPF, BSF, CISF, ITBP, SSB, NSG)
Implementation of disaster mitigation and national emergency responses via NDMA and NDRF
